NETS UK is pleased to provide speakers to your group as we spread the word about what we are trying to do for sick children across the UK.
About Us
Our (very short) History…
For nearly twenty years clinicians from the UK had been travelling to work with Dr Andrew Berry and his team at NETS NSW. They came back to this country realising the real difference that fast, specialist helicopters can make to the life a child in urgent medical situations.
The realisation grew in this country that such a service could make a big impact on services in this country, but for a number of years it remained an idea rather than a reality.
Dr Andrew Berry of Nets NSW
One of those clinicians was Asrar Rashid of the intensive care unit for children at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. Even though most of these centres are in central locations sometimes the logistics of getting children there or to another centre became more and more challenging, with crowded roads and frequent adverse weather conditions.
Dr Rashid was consulted about two years ago by Martin Eede (see staff biographies) about his grandson Alfie. Following that successful intervention (Alfie is 24 months old now and doing well!) the possibility of running a service for children in the UK started to emerge as a possibility. Martins experience in charities and fundraising meant that the wishes of the clinicians could start to be put into practice.

Enter HSBC ‘Little Angels’ appeal! This appeal by HSBC staff in the North East of the country will last until December 2011 but has already raised sufficient funds to get NETS UK started and to start developing the infrastructure a successful charity needs.
At the outset it was agreed that NETS UK would be clinically led, striving for excellence – (the best equipment, used by the best staff in the best possible helicopter!) and to be ground breaking and innovative in its approach.
At the same time it is fundamental to NETS UK that it works where possible in partnership with other charities and is available to every hospital and land ambulance service to use, free of charge at the point of delivery!
We hope the history of NETS UK will be a long and successful one and above all providing the clinicians in the UK with the same opportunities to move sick children effectively to our centres of medical excellence.
